Blood For Blood is A Tale of Two Cities thrillingly re-imagined for today. Holloway's version of Dickens' unbearably moving story of grief, retribution and self-sacrifice is here reinvented as a 21s century paean to obsessional grief, whether it be for a lost child, a lost love or the lost dignity of a nation.
This cool, elegant, emotionally punishing production reverses expectations as it expels cosy Dickensian theatricality. No wigs. No period frippery. Very few of Dickens' original words. Seven actors are set adrift in a sea of empty chairs and discarded shoes reminding us of the 'disappeared'. Expressionist lighting half illuminates a world of shadows and fakery.
Inspired by contemporary taste for reducing the great classics to their core elements, this 'adaptation' feels utterly original as it hurls Dickens' well-thumbed classic into the arena of duplicitous hotel room fixers and secret assignations that reverberate through a lifetime.
Original music underscores an exquisitely designed production building on the success of 2015s UK/HK Chung Ying collaboration with Jekyll & Hyde. A group of accomplished UK artists has once again been recruited to create work of international standing with one of Hong Kong's most impressively ambitious and accomplished theatre companies. The show is created, and UK performances are presented, in combination with the UK's legendary Red Shift Theatre Productions.
