In the late Qing Dynasty, a Hong Kong youngster Lai Man-wai throws himself into the revolutions against the Qing Dynasty, and decides to witness the history and to lead revolutions in people's minds with light and sound. His life was very much a testimony of the most turbulent years of modern Chinese history - from the fall of the Qing Dynasty to the founding of the Republic of China, through the Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese civil war up to the founding of the People's Republic of China. How does he accomplish a harmonious character, keep his belief and realise the ultimate of life as a "Son of the Time", a pioneer of Chinese cinema and an affectionate father?
