Ally Sloper's Half Holiday
P198889-06
Description

The title role of the show is the first comic strip hero called Ally Sloper, This character is first created in a comic paper which aimed at celebrating the first time the middle class received their Saturday afternoon off in 1884. Since then, Ally Sloper became the typical example of this emerging class.

The red-nosed Sloper was a snobby social climber. At the height of his ambition, he wanted to entertain Queen Victoria. Throughout the show. he is expecting the Queen to arrive and while he is waiting, he talks about his assaults on the various elements of the social calendar such as Ascot, Henley, Lords, etc. Not only can the audience enjoy the intensive highspeed humour, they can also have a glimpse of the Victoria past - the music hall style, conjuring and storytelling kind of entertainment, the glory of the Queen's Jubilee, the outrageous bright costumes as well as the various scenes on the enchanting drawings hung on the stage.
