The donkey in the play is originally a rich man who is an ardent lover of magic. He is turned into a donkey. Unless he eats the roses to take off the charm, he will be a donkey forever. When he was a donkey, he experienced the pain of being a donkey and servant and understood that magical power is not reliable. He eventually turned back into a human and started his new life.
