SCAPINO!' was inspired by Moliere's farce "Les Fourberies de Scapin" which in turn was inspired by an Italian Commedia performance Moliere attended. The action is set in a sea-side cafe in Naples in the present. Ottavio falls in love with Giacinta and marries her without his father's knowledge or consent. Leandro, Ottavio's friend, falls in love with Zerbinetta and marries her, again without his father's knowledge or consent. The imminent return of their fathers, Argante and Geronte, and the undoubted discovery of their misdeeds fills them with such horror that they seek the assistance of Scapino in explaining away their problems. The methods Scapino chooses to use toward this end are certainly unusual, and definitely very amusing, and probably domed to failure but Fate provides the happy solution.
