The Chung-Ying Theatre Company's production of Romeo and Juliet has been specially adapted and designed for touring to Hong Kong Secondary Schools.
As Shakespeare wrote it Romeo and Juliet is a long play but the time available to us in the schools, and the time it takes us to set up beforehand and clear up after, dictates a maximum 1½ hour playing time. There is no interval.
Possessing only one small Ford van puts constraints on the extent and flexibility of our set (the podiums fit inside each other) and the number and weight of costumes.
With a Company of only eight actors the necessity of 'doubling' characters also influences the design of the costumes and, to a certain extent, the style of the production.
In schools the production is played in an environmental setting with the audience seated all around and within the streets of Verona.
