The Three Cent Opera
P197980-02
Description
This is a vibrant street-life musical, adapted by the Chung-Ying Theatre Company, after John Gay's "Beggar's Opera" and Brecht's "Threepenny Opera". Set in the underworld nightlife of Wanchai, it tells the story of the power conflicts between the Bandit Mac-the-Knife, his friend the Chief of Police Tiger Brown, and his enemy Mr. Peachum, "King of the Beggars." By "marrying" Peachum's daughter Polly, while still having love affairs with low-dive Jenny and Lucy Brown, Macheath (Mac-the-Knife) begins the adventure that will lead him through the junks, the whorehouses and the prisons of Hong Kong, loved and betrayed by some, loved and saved by others. Peachum mobilises the entire Beggars Army for the disruption of an important Royal Visit, and blackmails the Police Chief into capturing Macheath...
