Rupert Chan is a translator, scriptwriter, author and lyricist. He has participated in the translation, adaptation, scriptwriting and lyrics of more than 30 Chung Ying Theatre Productions. His representative works include Twelfth Night, Hobson's Choice, Spring Fever Hotel, Little Shop of Horrors and Tuesday with Morrie.
Chan received several awards, including 'Playwright of the Year' by the Hong Kong Artist Guild (1990), CASH Golden Sail Most Performed Works Award in the Local Serious Work category for his lyrics work 'Nine Regions Sing as One' (1997); The 5th Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature for his collection of essays 'The Colonial Years, Rupert Chan's City Journal (2007)'; Commendation Award by the Secretary of Home Affairs for his outstanding contribution to the promotion of arts and culture (2004); and Medal of Honour by Hong Kong SAR government (2013).
Chan has served as a university administrator. He also contributed to the Board of Directors of Chung Ying Theatre Company for more than 20 years. He was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chung Ying Theatre Company, the host of RTHK Radio 4's 'The World of Opera' and a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Chinese Language of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The University of Hong Kong's School of Professional and Continuing Education.
