Description

Colin George directed and acted during his tenure as Artistic Director of Chung Ying Theatre from 1982 to 1984.

Colin began his professional career as an actor, after leaving Oxford University, touring in Shakespeare. He was an outstanding Henry V, both in London and on television. He began directing at Nottingham and left there in the 60s to run the Sheffield Playhouse, where he built up a reputation for lively theatre, culminating in the building of the Crucible Theatre. He helped to plan the design and was its first Artistic Director. An enthusiast for Young People's Theatre, he founded Theatre Vanguard, in Sheffield.

In the seventies Colin left for Australia, working with students and setting up a Drama Department at the University of New England. He was then appointed Director of the State Theatre of South Australia and did over twenty productions before returning to England. He is a much-travelled director. At home in England, his productions included Richard III at the Old Vic and Strip Jack Naked at The Royal Court.

In 1981, Colin was appointed Artistic Director of the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester, and came to Hong Kong in January 1982 to serve as Guest Director for the Chung Ying production of The Servant of Two Masters. He was appointed artistic director of Chung Ying in the same year. He retains close links with the State Opera of South Australia having directed Verdi's Falstaff there in 1982, and The Pearl Fishers and The Magic Flute in 1983.
