Bernard Goss joined the Chung Ying Theatre Company as Artistic Director from 1984 to 1988. In May 1985, he led Chung Ying tour of bilingual production, I am Hong Kong to Australia and perform in Adelaide Come Out Festival. Received positive review, the tour of I am Hong Kong have over 110 performances. Chung Ying became resident theatre company at Hong Kong Arts Centre in 1986, where Bernard directed several major public performances there.

Goss was a theatre director, drama teacher, and writer of children's plays. Earlier in his career he was the first school drama teacher in Lancashire, England, and subsequently became a lecturer and theatre director at the Rose Bruford College in London. He was then invited to direct his own professional children's plays at the Northcott Theatre (Exeter) and the Greenwich Theatre (London). Developing young people's companies in both these theatres, he eventually joined the Young Vic in London in 1972, where he also directed adult productions with some of the most promising theatre talents of that time. After leaving the Young Vic, he became a free-lance playwright, director and teacher working mostly in Belgium and the Netherlands. During this period of he particularly enjoyed directing the first-ever production of Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra performed in Egypt in 1976.

In addition to his service in Chung Ying, in 1986, Goss was invited by the Shanghai People's Arts Theatre to direct The Taming of the Shrew (in Mandarin) for the first Shakespeare Festival ever held in China. He was also the Director of a short course on 'play direction' for the Shanghai Drama Institute in 1987.

Goss was a member of the Drama Panel of the Arts Council of Great Britain for 5 years prior to his appointment with Chung Ying Theatre Company.
